Jujutsu Kaisen: Who Were The Most Overrated Characters? (2025)

Key Takeaways

  • Megumi was built up as a powerful character but never reached his full potential, making him overrated.
  • Hanami, a Disaster Curse, didn't live up to its potential despite being one of the strongest in the series.
  • Characters like Ryu, who had high energy output, failed to defeat their enemies, making them overrated in the series.

The very concept of being the strongest is a central plot point of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. In fact, it is the foundational driving force behind the character journeys of both Gojo and Sukuna, fan-favorite characters who have each held the moniker of the strongest sorcerer of their respective era, who are so powerful that their battle determined whether it was better to live a life of isolation or to nurture the strengths of others as well.

However, as important as strength is to a character's development, Jujutsu Kaisen has introduced some characters into the story who had been built up as being incredibly strong but ultimately failed to justify their place in the supposed power hierarchy. While this doesn't mean that they're weak by any means, their strength is simply not up to the caliber of the strongest characters in the series, so let's take a look at who they are.

Megumi Had Wasted Potential

A Character Who Was Supposed To Be The Strongest

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 1, "Ryomen Sukuna"

Story Arc

March 5, 2018

From his very first appearance in the story, Megumi had been a character who seemed to have many secrets behind his strength, especially when considering the nature of his Cursed Technique. As the series went on, more and more hints about his incredible potential were given, including a flashback explaining that someone who had his Cursed Technique in the past managed to kill a member of the Gojo clan who had both the Limitless and the Six Eyes Techniques. This flashback alone showed off what Megumi was capable of with his full potential.

Winning by dying and winning even if you die are two completely different things, Megumi.

However, despite building Megumi up as someone who could rival Gojo, the series never showed him even near his full potential. After being gone for a huge part of the story due to Sukuna taking over his body, Megumi got almost no development in terms of his strength, so he could never tame Mahoraga to show just how strong he had gotten, making him one of the most overrated characters in the series. However, fans found out just how powerful he could have been due to Sukuna taking over his body, which was enough to kill Gojo.

Hanami Was A Weak Disaster Curse

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 10, "After the Rain"

Debut Date

May 14, 2018

The Disaster Curses were the strongest Cursed Spirits of the modern-day era, with Hanami being one of these powerful monsters. Born from the fear and mistreatment that humans had towards nature itself, Hanami had a powerful Cursed Technique that allowed it to form gigantic plants and roots to deal an incredible amount of damage to its enemies, which was seen in the Kyoto Goodwill Event where it destroyed much of Jujutsu High.

When we're reborn, we'll no longer be the same as before. Even so, I'll be anticipating the day we meet again.

However, despite this formidable power, Hanami didn't manage to do much with it. While it was a formidable foe during the event, Todo and Yuji were able to incapacitate it despite not even being close to their full power themselves, forcing Hanami to resort to opening its Domain, though it failed in that too. At the start of the Shibuya Incident, Gojo was effortlessly able to defeat this Disaster Curse by merely increasing the output of his Infinity.

Ryu Had The Greatest Cursed Energy Output

He Failed To Defeat His Enemies

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 172, "Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Part 13"

Debut Date

Ryu Ishigori was an ancient sorcerer from 400 years ago who had been reincarnated into the Culling Game. What made this character so formidable was that he had been described as the sorcerer with the greatest Cursed Energy output in the entire Culling Game event, and this was shown with his powerful Cursed Technique that let him shoot an incredibly powerful and destructive wave of energy like something out of Dragon Ball.

He's a hotshot who boasts the highest Cursed Energy output of all the players.

However, the reason why he is pretty overrated is because of how he dealt with some of the stronger characters in the series. Despite being in a deadlock with 2 other powerful sorcerers, Ryu was beaten by Yuta, although he did put up a fair fight. However, his interaction with Sukuna was over before it began, when the King of Curses sliced Ryu into pieces before he could even react.

Suguru Geto May Be The Weakest Special Grade

The Weakest Special Grade Sorcerer

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 0-2, "Blacker and Blacker"

Debut Date

May 26, 2017

Suguru Geto was a fan-favorite character who was one of the central figures during the Hidden Inventory arc, which showed his descent into villainy. Before this, however, he shared the spot of the strongest sorcerer with Gojo and he more than proved this by easily defeating all those who were weaker than him, holding Gojo's current opinion on how the strongest serve to protect the weak. This was until Toji came into the picture and essentially disrupted the entire future of the Jujutsu world.

You should at least curse me at the end.

After being defeated by Toji and left in the dust by Gojo undergoing his awakening to become the definitive strongest sorcerer, Geto eventually became a villain. During the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, he comes face to face with Yuta, yet another Special Grade sorcerer but one who was new to his powers and not nearly as seasoned as Geto. However, he lost this clash and was later killed by Gojo, so while he was undoubtedly a very powerful character, he easily lost out against those who were on the same level as him.

Kashimo Was Hyped As The Strongest Of His Era

Kashimo Couldn't Compete With The Strongest Characters of Jujutsu Kaisen

First Appearance

Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 158, "Kogane"

Debut Date

September 13, 2021

The character who fans unanimously agree as being the most overrated in the entire franchise is Hajime Kashimo, someone who earned the moniker of the strongest sorcerer of the Edo Period. Since his introduction in the Culling Game arc, Kashimo was built up as the strongest of his era, similar to Sukuna and Gojo, so naturally, fans expected him to be on a relative level of power as them too due to being the only other person who lived to fight powerful foes.

Turn up the volume, it's a funeral for the living!

However, he failed to live up to this hype. Despite having one of the best fights in Jujutsu Kaisen against Hakari, he failed to defeat the third-year student due to not using his Cursed Technique (which is a one-time use technique), so it was already established that he likely wasn't on Sukuna and Gojo's level. However, fans still had some hope for him when he would actually use his technique. However, his use of Mythical Beast Amber simply made him faster and stronger than before, due to which Sukuna was able to kill him very swiftly and easily, proving that Kashimo was the most overrated character in the entire series.

Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
